At this year’s spring conference of the German Physical Society (DPG) in Berlin, the Radiation and Medical Physics Association once again awarded a prize for the best presentations. Second place, worth €100, went to Mona Pistel from the qMRI lab (Laun).

In her presentation, Mona focussed on how diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) can differentiate between benign and malignant breast lesions non-invasively and without the use of contrast agents. DWI measures the Brownian molecular motion in the body caused by thermal energy. Since malignant lesions have a higher cell density than benign lesions, the diffusion of molecules in malignant lesions is more restricted than in benign lesions. DWI can visualise this difference in diffusion and thus represents a promising tool in breast cancer diagnostics.

Congratulations!
